Softball is back in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rican Softball Federation and Men’s Superior National Softball will open the 2017 season with an innovative format in the “Copa WIPR Televisión”.

Seven teams will take the field on December Sunday 17, in two facilities, Juana Diaz and Ponce. The participant teams are: Leones de Ponce, Mets de Guaynabo, Múcaros de Aguada, Maviceros de Juana Díaz, Indios de Mayagüez, Petroleros de Peñuelas and Criollos de Caguas.

“Softball will be the first superior sport to be played after Hurricane Maria hit the island. We’ve made a huge effort to give the Puerto Ricans the opportunity to have fun and relief with sports, taking into account that the games will be for free for the public”, said Tommy Velazquez, President of the Puerto Rican Softball Federation, during a press conference.

The tournament will have a round robin and a page playoff. All the games will be played on Sunday, from 9 am, and the payoffs are expected to begin on January 21, 2018.

“Personally, the fact that Federations are resuming their activities is a cause for hope and motivation, after the devastating Hurricane Maria. A lot of sports facilities in our country were destroyed. Is important to highlight the effort and dedication of the Softball Federation to take the decision of go out to the field and present a high level tournament like this”, stated Sara Rosario, President of the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee.

The player’s draft for the tournament was made last Thursday, including the teams who asked for an exemption (Cafeteros de Yauco, Marlins de San Sebastián, Roosters de Isabela, Tarzanes de Rincón, Próceres de Barranquitas and Amelia de Guaynabo).

“The teams won’t be able to trade players, nor sign new ones once the tournament begins, because it’s a short competition. All the games will be played to a maximum of six innings or two hours, to avoid the night games and for the security of the athletes in the highways of our country”, explained the tournament director and Vice President of the Puerto Rico Softball Federation, Ronnie Petenko.

For the first time in history, the first two games of the day will be broadcasted every Sunday through WIPR Canal 6, with Raul Cintron making the play by play, and the commentaries of Jose “Kike” Garcia. The preview and the interventions between the games will be made by Jairy Otero.

We want to give joy to our country, and no better way to do it that airing these Softball games, with the opportunity to follow closely the performance of each player”, said Dr. Rafael Batista Cruz, President of the Puerto Rico Corporation for the Public Broadcasting

The opening day will be next Sunday in Parque de Sabana Llana in Juana Diaz, and the broadcasted games will be: Peñuelas vs Juana Díaz (9:00 a.m.) and Juana Díaz vs Guaynabo (11:00 a.m.). The other game in this field will be Guaynabo against Peñuelas, at 2:00 p.m.

In the other venue, Parque de Valle Alto, Ponce, will play Caguas vs Mayagüez (9:00 a.m.), Aguada vs Ponce (11:00 a.m.), Mayagüez vs Aguada (2:00 p.m.) and Ponce vs Caguas (4:00 p.m.).
